D-558-2 Skyrocket The Douglas Skyrocket (D-558-2) was a rocket and jet-powered research aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the United States Navy. On November 20, 1953, shortly before the 50th anniversary of powered flight, Scott Crossfield piloted the D-558-2 to Mach 2, the first time an aircraft had exceeded twice the speed of sound. Since it was so fast, it would sometimes be used to fly over enemy territories and take pictures. A total of three Skyrockets had been built, and all are now on display in different locations.
X-2 Starbuster The Bell X-2 Starbuster was a rocket-powered, swept-wing research aircraft built to investigate the structural effects of aerodynamic heating as well as stability and control effectiveness at high speeds and altitudes. The program was developed jointly in 1945 by Bell Aircraft Corporation, the United States Air Force and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) to explore aerodynamic problems of supersonic flight, and to expand the speed and altitude regimes obtained with the earlier X-1 series of research aircraft. Providing adequate stability and control for aircraft flying at high supersonic speeds was only one of the major difficulties facing flight researchers as they approached Mach 3. For speeds in that region, they knew they would also begin to encounter a "thermal barrier", severe heating effects caused by aerodynamic friction. Constructed of stainless steel and a copper-nickel alloy, and powered by a two-chamber XLR25 2,500 to 15,000 lbf (11 to 67 kN) thrust throttleable rocket engine, the X-2 was designed to probe this region. While the X-2 exceeded Mach 3, in the course of doing so it uncovered the supersonic aircraft problem of inertial coupling. On its last flight, the aircraft crashed and the pilot was killed.
Flying at speeds in excess of Mach 3, the Blackbird was instrumental in gathering strategic reconnaissance information from altitudes too high for radar to detect. This Caldecott Honor book from beloved children's book author Leo Politi, originally published in 1946, is set on Olvera Street, the site of Los Angeles' original Latino settlement, which is still preserved very much as it once was--a busy and colorful me'lange of small artisan shops, restaurants, and strolling musicians. Pedro tells of the community's Christmas tradition of the "posada," a procession that reenacts Mary and Joseph's pilgrimage to Bethlehem, and of the "pinata," a papier-mche vessel filled with toys that children break open at the Posada's end. Pedro hopes to find a music box among the toys that will spill out of the pinata. But first, he is asked to don the red wings of an angel and lead the procession. Because he not only is costumed like an angel but also sings like one, he is asked to lead the chorus in the traditional Posada song. Music and lyrics for the song are included, and with them children may create their own Posada pageant.Book Details:Format: HardcoverPublication Date: 10/20/2009Pages: 32Reading Level: Age 6 and Up
